Pend Books is an independent bookstore in Whithorn, Dumfries and Galloway. When owner Julia Muir-Watt first took over the store it was a butcher’s shop with a tin roof and leaking walls.

She wanted to learn how to make the building more energy efficient and keep her books protected from damp, so she approached Zero Waste Scotland and had an energy assessment carried out.

Helped by an interest-free SME loan from the Scottish government, she decided to:

  • insulate the walls and windows
  • introduce LED lighting
  • install a biomass pellet boiler

This led to estimated annual savings of £4000.
